The London bombings and your art - 2005/07/18 03:14
Hi all.

Have the bombings in London and related events (9/11, Madrid, Bali, war in Iraq) affected your art? How?

Cheers,

Cheryl

Hello all.
I am a Toronto artist working in Oil as well as Sculpture. I have to say that the current world events of mindless violence give me one of the bleakest spells of creativity angst. Looking at the art I produced during the month following the London bombing-(I didn't finish most of it) fills my heart with anxiety. The reason being the Mass media's role in portraying the events with a round the clock images of carnage and a host of experts' opinions for a good measure. Certainly this is being done in the name of providing "News coverage", but I get the distinct feeling that everyone is required to be afraid of living. Be it the recent SARS outbreak, Bird flu, Militants, Hurricanes,... you get the picture. I don't watch T.V, yet it is increasingly hard to filter out the voluminous torrent of 'News'.
It is my responsibility to be politically informed, and to voice my desires for peaceful co-existence and fairness for all. However, it proved to be an impossibility to segregate my feelings and general frame of mind from my art. After all, I am my art.
